Defiance Cycling – Winter ’09 newsletter

Posted by Sheila on December 16, 2009

After atrocious weather in October, lots of cold and rain, November turned out to be a delight. Every single weekend was mostly sunny with pleasant temperatures. So naturally, we got out for some “post” season rides.  One weekend in early NOV was warm enough for shorts! The last one was as recent as Dec 6th when Mike N, Mike M, and Dave D logged 30 miles on the Time Trial loop from McFeeter’s house on Riverview. Let’s hope that sunny, dry, moderate temperature weather is going to show up again.

New Year Day Bike Ride

Let’s plan a New Years Day ride…. We will have to base the ride on the weather for the day. I remember past New Years with 5 degree weather or one year, not too long ago, that I was out in cycling shorts! If it is kind of warm we can meet at the Triangle, OR Temps’ really cold – let’s meet at some ones warm garage. Ride length will vary. It’s a great way to start the new year, and log those first miles for 2010.

Watch defiancycling.org for last minute details.

Tee’s for Sale

The Team DEFIANCE / Switzer Realty race team has some T shirts for sale. They are royal blue with the Team DEFIANCE logo on the front and the sponsors on the back. They are priced at $12.00 each. Sizes range from S to XXL.  Contact Dave Duerk, as they are parked at his house.                                        Christmas gift?

You will receive a T shirt as part of your 2008

Membership fee. If you want additional T’s

$12.00 each

2010 goals……

Ride as a group, not dropping so many people.

Enhance the “C” group rides.

Re establish the idea of a “B” pace ride, where you can chat with others.

Track Cycling??

Larry Wagner has an idea for some mid winter cycling…..indoor variety….a possible trip to London Ontario for a chance to ride the velodrome there. He is looking at JAN 9-10.  The idea is to leave very early on SAT morning to arrive at 10AM in London ONT. Participate in the Velodrome 101 class for a few hours, then return to the track later that day to watch their races. We might spend the night and return home the next AM. Let Larry know if you are interested.             NOTE: the track is like a cereal bowl, as the length is 138 meters.

If you want to go along, go to www.forrestcityvelodrome.ca and register for the Saturday track one session at 11am.  After I registered, 11 spots were open.  I am planning on leaving Defiance Saturday morning at 5:30 am.  Linda and I are staying Saturday night at the Comfort Inn, 1156 Wellington, 519-685-9300.  But sure to bring your Passport or whatever you need to get into Canada, and more importantly, get back into the USA.

 SPRING BREAK

A few of us are considering a trip to Asheville NC for spring break. It will probably in the early part of the week, as Spring Break is Easter week in 2010. It should be a chance to practice some climbing on the “Blue Ridge Parkway” Bruce, in Archbold, is kinda heading this up, keep in contact with him at 419-446-9339. OR email@ – bwhiteman@rtecexpress.net

Team DEFIANCE 3 season jacket order

The jacket order is in to Dan V. He will get the info to Louis Garneau (probably by the time you read this) and we will await their arrival. We will need to pay half the order fee with the order, SO if you will make a partial payment of $65.00 and get it to Larry Wagner ASAP that will provide the funds needed.

We will want to have a meeting in January or early Feb. to look at our upcoming race season, IF we want to host a race, set 2010 club fees, and a few other items, I’ll get an E mail out for that.

Spinning classes are continuing at the YMCA here if Defiance, join in far a great workout.

IF we do spinning at R Bike Shop after Christmas I’ll get the word out.

That’s it for now. Enjoy the Holiday Season.
